Dr. Harness Answers the Question

In this clip, Jay Harness, MD, FACS explains why knowing your menopausal status is important for the treatment of breast cancer.
Knowing the menopausal status is very important in the treatment of breast cancer. So we are talking about pre-menopausal versus post-menopausal. It's particularly important in knowing what kind of anti-estrogen medication we are going to be using. Also, the younger a pre-menopausal patient is with breast cancer, potentially then, the greater our suspicion about the breast cancer gene, and obviously then, referring that patient on for an evaluation by a genetic counselor.

Chemotherapy is used in both pre and post menopausal patients. In pre-menopausal patients, ovarian function is often marked out by the chemotherapy. So again, knowing that someone is pre-menopausal, potentially may want to have children in the future, issues such as harvesting eggs to be banked so that patient could become pregnant later on is an important issue.

There are certain blood tests that can be done to determine menopausal status. This is typically something that the medical oncologist does as part of his/her determination of the type of anti-estrogen medication that a patient is going to receive.
