A: Dr. Harness Answers the Question

In this clip, Jay Harness, MD, FACS explains what to do if you are newly diagnosed with breast cancer.

It's really important with a new diagnosis that you be in the hands of a multidisciplinary team of people who are used to working together. This includes a breast surgeon, a medical oncologist, a radiation oncologist, hopefully that team has a very experienced pathologist working with it, also members of the team including genetic counselors, social workers, research people, etc.

The treatment of breast cancer is multidisciplinary. The specialists need to be communicating with each other. Your case should be presented to, hopefully, a weekly conference where the nuances of your case are discussed, and the bottom line is that hopefully, what's being created is an individualized treatment plan. That's where the modern treatment of breast cancer is today. Please follow that pathway when you are newly diagnosed.
